All 3 'Divergent' Movies in Order (& How They're Connected) (2024)

The ‘Divergent’ film series is based on a series of books under the same name written by Veronic Roth. The story is set in a dystopian future where society is divided into five factions, each representing a different virtue: Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peacefulness), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery), and Erudite (intelligence). The book series took YA fiction by storm, and everybody expected an instant hit when the movies were first announced. The first movie was relatively successful and ensured that the franchise was going to be continued. And so, at this point, the ‘Divergent’ franchise consists of three movies, and today, we’re going to tell you how to watch in the proper order.

Editor’s Note: This watch order was updated in November 2023, and reflects the most up-to-date state of the franchise.

All ‘Divergent’ movies in release date order

The franchise started with the release of ‘Divergent’ in 2014. The movie was successful in terms of box office and managed to earn just enough money to clear the path for a sequel, however as the franchise was adding movies, each was less successful than the prior, and the last movie in the franchise was canceled altogether, leaving the series on a cliffhanger. Here are all ‘Divergent’ movies in release date order:

  1. ‘Divergent’ (2014)
  2. ‘The Divergent Series: Insurgent’ (2015)
  3. ‘The Divergent Series: Allegiant’ (2016)

Are all ‘Divergent’ movies connected? What’s the best way to watch them?

All three movies in the ‘Divergent’ series are interconnected and tell a continuous story. They follow the main character, Tris Prior, as she navigates a dystopian society, discovers her identity as a Divergent, and becomes involved in a rebellion against the oppressive government. The events in each movie build upon the previous ones, creating a cohesive narrative throughout the series. The best way to watch the movies is in their release date order, which is at the same time chronologically correct order.

Where to watch the above-mentioned movies?

All three movies in the ‘Divergent’ franchise can be rented on Apple TV or Amazon. In some regions, the movies can also be streamed on Max.

Will there be more movies in the ‘Divergent’ franchise?

The fourth film in the ‘Divergent’ series, originally planned for March 2017, based on the latter part of the ‘Allegiant’ book, was rescheduled for a June 2017 release with director Lee Toland Krieger. However, the film was ultimately canceled, leaving the series on a cliffhanger. In response to the poor box office performance of the third film, there were considerations of turning the fourth installment into a television film, possibly leading to a spinoff series with new characters.

Shailene Woodley expressed uncertainty about returning to the project, and in February 2017, it was confirmed as a television project, leading to Woodley backing out of her starring role. Despite initial plans to develop a television series with Starz and Lionsgate Television, the project was abandoned in December 2018 due to a lack of interest from the cast and network executives. In short, it looks like there won’t be any new ‘Divergent’ movies.
