Questions from Interop Webinar

We had some great questions from yesterday's ADO.NET Interoperability webinar. Check out the list below for the best of the bunch:

Question: We have numerous applications that were build on OLE.DB, and we are looking to migrate to ADO.NET? What advice would you give?

Answer: ADO.NET maintains a significant heritage to OLE.DB, however it’s important to remember that it is a fundamentally different API. While some of the concepts carry over, particularily the manner in which schema collections are access and are organized, the look and feel or the interfaces does not lend itself to an easy port. That said, those who have invested the time to make the migrations, are generally very pleased with the net result.

Question: The presentation is focused on interoperability between different database systems – what level of interoperability can you offer when it comes to supporting a broader range of database versions ?

Answer: We typically adopt support for the latest database versions with a 0 to 6 week timeframe. For established versions of databases, we offer compatibility guarantees backed by our industry renowned test suites to ensure your application never has deal with variations in database behaviors or idiosyncrasies.

Question: Some of your ease-of-migration tools, especially the parameter marker option will allow us to safe-guard our current SQL libraries. Do you anticipate adding similar features like this to your providers ?

Answer: Yes, we are already introducing implicit and explicit Oracle REF Cursor support, and have a number of other features in the pipe-line too. If you have a specific suggestion we’ve love to hear and we can it in our queue.
